The National Inter-University Consortium for Telecommunications, in short “CNIT”, is a non-profit consortium, established in 1995, bringing together 37 public Italian universities to perform research, innovation and education/training activities in the field of Information and Communication Technology. CNIT also operates six National Laboratories, one of them is the Wireless Communications Laboratory (WiLAB), at the University of Bologna (Department of Electrical, Electronic and Information Engineering – “Guglielmo Marconi”), which is part of this project.
CNIT has the statutory purpose of promoting basic and applied research in the various fields of ICT, coordinating activities among the member universities with particular attention to the definition, promotion and implementation of innovative projects of significant size. CNIT participated in hundreds of research projects, including EU-coordinated projects, ERC grants and Italian nationwide initiatives. In the H2020 European program, CNIT has obtained 48 projects, with 11 of the latter being coordinated by CNIT.
WiLAB has a large expertise in EU projects and has a significant track of research accomplishments and top-tier publications. In addition to scientific expertise, CNIT team has the capability to organize workshops and conferences (having chaired, among others, the IEEE ICUWB 2011, IEEE PIMRC 2018, IEEE ICC2023, etc.) and is active on the editorial and technical boards of several major journals and conferences, including the top wireless communications journals, such as IEEE Trans. on Wireless Communications and IEEE Trans. on Communications. CNIT is the organizer of the 5GItaly 3-day event, the biggest event in Italy dealing with 5G and beyond, involving public administration, service operators, manufacturers, research body with keynotes, discussions, scientific sessions, and a PhD school. CNIT was elected member of the 5GPPP and it is also a member of the 6G Smart Networks and Services Industry Association (6G-IA).
